I've acquired an older Warner trailer brake controller. It looks like it's from the 40s-50s vintage. I compared the inside of it from a later warner trailer brake controller and the contacting "fingers" look thicker on the later one. By look at just this difference I was wondering if this would make that older controller a 6-volt? If so, will it hurt anything if I ran 12-volts through it to control the brakes on a 2-axle trailer?

Most of the magnet coils on electric brakes are 6-volt anyway. That's why it's necessary to install a tuning resistor on most applications to prevent brake lockup, especially if you're using brakes on both axles and wiring them in parallel. The 2-coil tuning resistor with a sliding adjustment will let you tune the brake response. It's avery good idea to use it no matter whioch controller you're using. The current should be adjusted so you can just barely lock the trailer wheels with the brakes fully applied.

That's interesting... I did not know that about the brake magnet coils being 6 volt. I have been wondering/dreaming how I can pull a small camping trailer with my 6 volt 50 3600 and get the brakes to work.

if it were me and i was to use a brake controller for my trailer
i'd make sure i have GOOD brakes and a prodigy unit.
