It looks like it's from the 40s-50s vintage. I compared the inside of it from a later warner trailer brake controller and the contacting "fingers" look thicker on the later one. By look at just this difference I was wondering if this would make that older controller a 6-volt? That's why it's necessary to install a tuning resistor on most applications to prevent brake lockup, especially if you're using brakes on both axles and wiring them in parallel. The 2-coil tuning resistor with a sliding adjustment will let you tune the brake response. It's avery good idea to use it no matter whioch controller you're using. The current should be adjusted so you can just barely lock the trailer wheels with the brakes fully applied.
