The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop 1941 GMC 248 Camshaft Removal

Any advice or directions out there for removal of the cam shaft on my 248? I have everything else removed. Just the timing gear and the camshaft remain. I don't see any obvious way to remove it without damage. Perhaps the secret is beneath some grease yet.

Did you remove the two screws you see throught the holes in the timing gear??? May need to turn it over to line up with those screws.

I was afraid someone would say something like that. It is frozen. I had to drop the crack with the flywheel and clutch for the same reason as the bell housing bolts could not be accessed.

The little thing-a-magigs that the camshaft pushes are froze. I have them soaking in penetrating oil to try to free them. how much force can I use to remove these to allow the camshaft to rotate?

You must be talking about the lifters. Even if the lifters are "frozen" you should be able to rock the camshaft a small amount. If you can't I would think that the cam is stuck too. If this is the case I would concentrate on freeing the cam first. Since you have the pan off you should be able to shoot the cam bearings with a little penetrating oil.
