Noticed a leak in my rad today after putting a set of plugs and wires in my 67 c 10...
PO told me it was a 400 eng with a quad jet carb..

on closer inspection and getting under the hood a bit I'm not so sure what the heck is in this truck...

I didn't see a # on the block (not sure where to look really)maybe it was covered by sludge....

I saw firing order 18436572 on the intake...

and the carb looks like a 2bbl to me it says rochester 2 jet ?...I can see where an after market cruise set up is on it...cable and chain ect...

I'm not sure this is not a 350,327,307 whatever...any suggestions on how to know for sure?

I looked at the door tag and the glove box lid has the sticker on it in good cond & very legible...says the truck had a 292 from the factory and based on the vin and info from LMC
was assembled in the Fremont plant in '67..

anyway when looking for plugs in a champion book at AZ I noticed the earliest listing for a factory inst 400 was '70 mod...I used that info for plugs and they didn't fit...base was too big for starters...I think I am going to be in for problems till I can ID what is in this truck...

I still need to replace that radiator too and now I'm not sure if a oem type will still bolt in??? and when I do I don't want to encounter air bubbles or coolant circ probs...

any help is greatly appreciated

tia

On the right front side of the engine, there's a little flat spot just in front of the cylinder head. Take a wire brush to it and see what the stamped numbers (and letters) say. If you can't find that, behind the left head is a series of cast numbers. Post either or both numbers (stamped one narrows it down better) here and we can decipher it for you,
Scott

Engine code numbers should be on a pad in front of the right cylinder head at the same level as the mounting surface for the head [left head if you are looking at it from the front] Motors manuals list these codes to tell you what you have, hope this helps

Went out this morn and looked at the motor,
on the pass side there is the alt and couldn't make out anything behind it number wise...could still be covered with gunk but it's definately not obvious... didn't see anything on the front dr side at all...to look behind may involve an inspection mirror...gonna try to get some of the crud off later and look some more...still kind of amazed at the small carb on there...

If you got an alt on the pass side in that truck its definatly a later model engine.
You have to pull the alt to read the serial # that Scott,s talking about.
As I remember 67 still had the alt up top on the drivers side exhaust manifold.

in my other 67, with the 250 the alt is on the Dr
side...

in this one the alt is on the pass side and there was a couple old brackets no longer in play...looked like prob for a/c and or pwr steering pump...so no telling about this eng...
gonna have to find some #'s or some kind of distinguishing characteristics...I noticed it has what I have heard called a clutch fan..not sure when those started showing up...

I found my smaller wire brush tonite, tomm I'll scrape off both sides by the areas bolters have suggested and see what I can come up with..

I hit the motor with some degreaser today but it didn't reveal anything by itself...gonna have to try some elbow grease and wire

thanks X

I went out there with the little wire brush and I can't see anything on the front of the block on either side...on the pass side just below the head I can't see any numbers at all behind the alt..there is a freeze plug right there just below the head too on both sides actually...guess if I don't find something on the back with a mirror I'm gonna be in deep doo doo on Id'ing this motor for sure...

I looked at some trucks on ebay last night with all kinds of V8's and it looks just like other 350's and 400's I saw in others...
bummer

OK here we go again...sorry to be annoying here...I just looked at that link again X and I see three freeze plugs on the pass and I can see two for sure on the dr but I think there is a third back there covered in sludge too...
also I looked at the front again and somebody may have to help me here but it looks like there is a big thick piece of metal down around the balancer...would this be an 'external balancer' some have been mentioning?

if anybody wants I could send pics of this motor for them to see

TIA

on the drivers side of the engine behind the head on the flat spot between the block and the bellhousing, its on the same plane as the head,,in other words its south of the head LOL..not below it where the freeze plugs are.... is the casting number for all small block chevys. its right under the firewall usually and hard to see....youll need a mirror... its below the oil pressure tap or sender... then go to mortec.com and look up the casting number... that will tell ya the original block...of course not if its bored or crank modified...
just go here http://www.mortec.com/location.htm mortec

Zenish is correct only the 400 has 3 frost plugs on each side of the block. To find the pad on the block with your code numbers you will probably have to remove the alternater

I'm gonna pull it I guess but there is space behind it between it and the block and you can't see any pad with numbers there...I got pics...I promise... smile

there's like two inches between the alt and the block

I see that ...it looks handy and I appreciate it...there is just so much crud and stuff I may be missing it on the front...may have to break out heavier artillery for crud removal than my little wire brush...as for those #'s in the back I may try their suggestions of making rubbings with foil or playdoh...sounds like it could help...one thing is for sure, this is going to make me work smile

I can't really see the alt being in the way a prob because I can see clearly where the head and block meet..there is a freeze plug spot just below that and if there are #'s there they must be very faint...I am not gonna give up on this tho...

I wanted a new air filter today and since I knew
looking up specs in a book was useless I just measured the one that was in it...the fitting fram turned out to be CA326..
