This is a rather strange question - did fire trucks ( especially in the '50's ) ever have roof marker lights ? I don't remember seeing any but I never really took the time to look . I'm thinking of swapping cabs on my fire truck with one of the two better cabs that I have but they have marker lights . It would be easier to fill those ( the marker lights ) holes than replace the floor and cab corners on the existing cab . But if if I could find evidence that fire tucks had marker lights ( sometimes) that would make it even less metal work for me . Thanks Weird ED H

Yes, They did in the corners on some trucks. If you send me your regular email. I will send you a picture of one. It is a long nose model. and My 53 coe had them as well. The were in the corners just above the windshield. Now, some did not. and they had small spot lights mounted in the same spot or on the
A pillars.

As you well know, I'm as big a stickler as you'll find when it comes to truck originality. BUT, I say, leave 'em on!!! I've always liked the marker lights. They look cool, aid in "visable-ness" (yes, made up a word there! ;-) and by the '60s, I think were a regular item. Nobody will complain about them.

They must have eventually been mandated by code, since the original department added them to my '68 Seagrave. Funny thing - it's an OPEN CAB! They put them on the top of the windshield frame.

My recessionary two-cents worth, anyway!!!

The lights you refer to are actually listed in factory literature (GMC parts book 150-420)I just sold the set shown here from this truck cab. They were dealer installed w/GMC part numbers. Here is a picture of them installed (1950 Chevrolet 2-ton).

Thanks guys I'll deside what to do when I get the original cab off and see how much work it Really is to fix it or replace it . Mybe it would be more fun to make it a Open cab ? At least then I could wear my OZ fire helmet without scrunching down (lol). ED H

Speaking of, I just found a source for new Yankee 77's (the marker light often installed by the dealers and the ones on all three of my AD Big Bolts) -- He's the Taillight King and he's in the new Links for April. I actually just ordered mine by phone a few minutes ago. Nice fellow -- we chatted a bit.

An open cab would be cool, though, Ed.

I sell them to.... I was also, able to get glass lenses and not the plastic that they will come with today. I can special order them with glass and they were the same cost as the plastic ones.

and Yes, ed. I emailed you back with a few models of trucks and a vintage add with the close ups in the pictures.

One being a 53. long nose with roof lamps and spot lights.

I to say keep them..

you have to remember that fire truck builders often took a commercial chevy truck and modified it to meet their buyers order. So any truck may have options that wouldn't be found on a "standard" chevy truck. Example Oren(the folks that built my rig) took a standard 1951 green 2 ton 6400 truck cab and frame with no body and built a fire truck by painting it red and adding many of Oren's designed parts. Specificlly, the bars around the doors in an AD cab are an exclusive Oren touch and that is how one can ID an Oren from other FT builders. Other builders had their own designs off the commercial version.

So roof lights may or may not be found on your cab... it is yours so you choose! :-)

my rig, a luverne didnt have markers. and it only had on tail light with no turn signals. it now has turn signal but they were added for todays world.
