I found a complete good running Chevy 261 to put in place of my 216 that is now in my 1939 1/2 ton. I will be taking the bell housing off to check the clutch before cleaning and painting the new engine. This will be my first time replacing a clutch. What other parts should I be replacing while I have the engine out ? Also will my Fenton headers and dual intake that are on the 216 bolt to the 261. I had to use rings to get the intake bolted to the 216. Do I use the same rings or do I need a different set of rings. And one last question, it appears will I need to relocate the oil filter when I change the intake. Any suggestions ? I'm going to try to do all the work myself.

Hy K9sicem, you should replace the pilot bearing in the center of the crankshaft, and check/replace your throwout bearing as well. You will need alignment rings of a larger diameter I think. I wouldn't try to mount the oil filter till the engine is back in the truck, just because of interference possibilities. Are you aware that you must use a shorter water pump for this swap? You have a couple of choices on how you do that. Good luck.

yes you will need the rings see if they fit while you have it apart. if you mount the oil filter on the firewall or frame use oil lines that flex, not the hard lins or they will crack.

I bought a plate off ebay for the new water pump. I belive this moves the pump up so it will cool better. I have not found the replacement pump yet. Where is a good place to find the rings for the intake? I'm a rookie.

Buy a 56-62 water pump gasket and a 1954 or earlier water pump gasket. Use one on each side of the plate (with a little gasket sealer - trust me, I did this install on two trucks last summer).

If you do not receive installation instructions with the plate, check back here (I did not receive instructions with either plate I bought off eBay).

Why the two differant gaskets? Which one goings between the plate and the block? I also need a new water pump, while looking at the old one I see what looks like a crack. Better off just getting a new one. What year pump should I be looking for? The 261 is a 1958. Should I get a stock pump for that motor?
