Hi Guys.

I read the tech tip on replacing king pins however I Have run into a problem.

I have removed the lock rings from the top and bottom as well as the greese fittings and lock pin as per the instruction.

The problem is I cannot remove the dust caps from the assembly. is there a trick to remove them or can i just use a press to push out the whole King pin assembly with the dust caps

thanks

You need to pull the top plug out if you are pressing it out through the bottom. A hammer & chisel ought to get it out. They are pretty soft.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Use a punch on the top one. Put a hole in it and lever it out. Then the bottom one can be pushed out with the kingpin.

What kind of truck do you have woth lock rings?

My dust caps were set in place via "peening" of the edges in 4 places. Drilled a hole in the cap and pressed the pin out as Wrench and Trucker state. Then flipped them over and pushed the cap out fom the back side.
When I put the new ones in I put a tad of JB Weld on them instead.

chaimv,

I noticed your rig was a car. Aren't king pins indigenous to straight axles only. What kind of front suspension does a Styleline have.

Stuart,

I had the same question; however, here are king pins for Chevy cars through 1954. Looks like the "swing-arm" open-type knee-action 49-54 suspension still had king pins ( gone in 1955 ) ?

I am going to guess that there is a vertical kingpin known as the "master" kingpin and then there is a kingpin in the lower and upper hinge. This was the early form of independent suspension without ball joints.

thanks guys

I got one out. Now i am trying to install the new pin and bushings. the bushings are going in very tight. is this normal.

also the kit came with 2 bearings and 2 washers. i assume one of each for each kingpin. does the bearing go on the bottom or on the top?

thanks

Because this is not a truck, you need to find out how the bushing is supposed to go in. With the trucks, the lighter models have "floating" bushings and the heavier ones have pressed in bushings that are reamed to size.
