After running this 250 engine for 10 years,I think it is time to rebuild her. I drive the truck as a daily driver, tow a light weight trailer.Three speed transmission, stock rear end, gear ratio unknown at this moment.

What are some improvements I can have done to the head for better fuel mileage?

What would be the best cam to use for towing and mileage?

Would flat top pistons be best for thiss type of rebuild?

If you have any more advice for this engine please post it

Thank You for Your help,Jimmy

i think i would see how bad the bore is first ,you might want to be careful when you talk about power in towing and mileage .but a few thing's you could do would be if using stock pistons ,mill the head about .025 thousand's odds are it's a little out any way .stick with the smaller valve's . if you can get it a rv cam for torque in a stick truck would be a plus .got to be careful how much you bump up the compression ,go to hei dist and have it re-curved .don't know if it will fit but i have a decent lightly used rv cam out of a 292 chevy .headers and a two barrel carb would work nice .i used a Rochester for a while before i went to a small 4brl .4360 holley

If I stay at a compression ratio of 8.5:1 I should be find.

I know the cyclinders walls are smooth, had to replace head gasket awhile back.Engine has flat top pistons, small valves.

The truck was own first in the sixties by a natural gas company.
No telling how many times this engine has been rebuilt.

if you do stay with stock just go .030 over if bore has a lot of taper .it aught to be great .

first a 292 cam will not work in a 230-250 motor the fuel pump lobe is not in the same location. if you have to buy new pistions get 307 flat tops they fit and are cheaper then buying 250 pistions.

head work for a low end puller just clean up the intake ports. the exhausts can use a little more work. as for carbberation. get a dual carb intake use to staged 2 bal. carbs the fuel distrabution is a big step forward.

you can go a little bigger on the valves.

get a copy of chevrolet inline six-cylinder power manual by leo santucci.
