I am familiar decoding the NORMAL factory engine assembly serial number found on machined pad at the base of the distributor. However, when it deviates from the normal factory coding, I haven't found a source to decode it.

Here's my example. I have a 1959 235 6cylinder engine.
The engine serial number is "12745 er CAL".

I believe this is a "replacement" engine. Not sure if GM replacement or from some engine rebuilder shop.

Does anyone know where there is documentation on this type of coding? I would like to learn more.

Thanks,
Brian
