Can anyone take a picture of a stock 15" steel wheel that was "factory fresh" for a 1965 C10? Did these have clips to hold the stock hub cap on or did they have ears formed in the hub of the rim?

I went to the local salvage yard, hub cap in hand, to find (1) 6-lug stock steel wheel for my '65. Problem is the salvage yard has a mountain of rims, everything all mixed together, 4 lug, 5 lug 6 lug, 14", 15" & 16". They had some early 60's C20 trucks, but those were all 8 lug.

My plan is to find (1) stock steel wheel for my fender mount spare, with the correct hub cap and a new coker BFG 4 ply tire.

Any help would sincerely be appreciated!

John

John, here are the pictures that I have of the original 15" wheels that I took off of my '66 C-10. They are 6 lug, and had three metal tabs/ears formed into the ring around the center. I know '63-'70 used the same rims, I'm not sure about the '60-'62 trucks though.

a fellow I know has a '66 c10 fleetside that has been in his family since it was new. He still has the original wheels which have the 3 tabs/ears/dimples on his 15 inch steel wheels.

From what I have learned, the four tab/ear/dimple wheels are late 50's to early 60's model 6 lug truck wheels.

Here are some pictures of my wheels:

The 4 or 3 tab wheels all fit the same as far as I know, the lug pattern is the same. When I bought my truck 3 of my wheels were the four tabs and the other 2 wheels had the three tabs(all four wheels plus the spare).

I hope this helps.

Thank you for the pictures.

I have attached a link to the photo of the hubcap I have. This looks like the right one for the 64-66, would you agree?

Hot Rod,
That is the corect hubcap for the 64'-66'. My 64' is original, bught new by my grandparents, and the wheels I have on it arethe style with the ears to hold the hubcaps instead of the clips that are welded in place. It may be different on yours, depending on what GM had in stock at the time of manufacture.

It's the little stuff that is challenging...

Ok guys, found a rim from a fellow stovebolter I am planning on buying. I still don't think I have the correct hub cap though. Take a look at the back of the hubcap in this picture:

http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2400531110103882008lLoGQC

Now from the front it sure looks like the correct hubcap:

http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2945588990103882008GkQXaX

The inside diameter is only 7-7/8". The lugs are on about a 9-3/4" diameter? It looks like maybe this hubcap was supposed to have the clips that weld into the rim?

Anybody have a stock hubcao that fits the ears that you could take a look at the hubcap and see if it looks like the picture? I am betting that the hubcap for the ear style rim has a simple rolled over edge, not the big inward flange like on the hubcap I have.

The back of the one I have looks kind of like the back of the one's on the rally rim center caps that were used on Camaro's?

What say ye gentlemen?

As always, thanks for your help guys!

John

Thanks to everyone for their input, Cal55 I did indeed get the photo, thanks.

So from what I have learned thus far:

Some of the wheels had the molded in ears on them and some had tabs welded to the wheel. It looks like the hubcap I have must be for a stock chevy wheel with the tabs that are welded on.

Here's the picture of the back of the hubcap:
http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2400531110103882008lLoGQC

And here is the front of the hubcap:

Anybody got the wheels with the weld on tabs on their 1960 thru 1966 C10? By chance could you send me a picture of the wheel?

My '60 wheels have welded tabs, problem is I don't know if they are original to the truck. Took me forever to find a fifth one for the spare. I finally found one last fall that was a spare for an old boat trailer and was the same size as my truck wheels. I don't have pictures right now. When it stops raining I will try to get you some pictures, my shop is so full I don't have room to get a good shot.

I will have the same problem with my '65 Suburban. I want original style wheels for it to put hub caps on.

Thanks for the post Iron Clad. Very nice trucks! So the hubcaps you have, that use the welded on clips, do they have the inside flange that looks like this?

Yes! The flange looks very similiar -or- just like that. The hub caps that I have are original. Four of them came with the truck and I bought 3 more from a guy that sells old used hub caps at last years Portland swap meet. I needed one for the spare and 2 for a tear drop trailer I plan to buy in the future.

Now, I think the clips on the spare wheel I got last fall may have been slightly different because the hub cap fit really tight. Much harder to put on then the ones on the truck. I had to adjust the clips a bit to get the hub cap on. I hope I never have to change the tire!! I didn't see any scratches on the spare wheel where the hub cap would fit so I'm thinking the wheel never had a hub cap installed and the clips were never used and that's why they were so tight.

With the spare tire bolted to the holder on the truck I jumped in the bed and looked from the back side and I could see the clips firmly bedded in the flange of the hub cap.

Iron Clad and fellow bolters,

Thanks again for your valued input.

Plan is to buy a stock 6 lug on 5-1/2 b.c. wheel from a fellow bolter, cal55, and make my own weld on tabs. Since this wheel will be for my fender mount spare I think I can make this work.

I will post up some photos when completed.

John
