For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 1,186 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 1,186 | I was out messing with my kids '69 Chevrolet 1/2 ton 4x4, 4 speed the other day. I grabbed the drive shaft and turned it. I could turn it a lot! I could turn the shaft from stop to stop 3-4 inches. It appears to be loose in the rear end. Not nowing much about diffs, is this just a matter of re-shimming the gears or is something really wrong? Or possibly is the problem somewhere else?

If that bearing is gone the pinion will 'float' altering pinion depth into ring gear (again causing A LOT of wear....I think regardless I'd be pulling it apart for exploratory surgery........Good Luck! | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 | The rear sounds like it is loose, but if you have no experience with rears, I would not recommend you take it apart. Take it to someone who has experience setting up ring sets. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 1,186 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 1,186 | The rear sounds like it is loose, but if you have no experience with rears, I would not recommend you take it apart. My knowledge is limited to I know it has a ring and pinion, bearings, bearing caps and a couple other things. I think I'll let somebody else look at it!
