The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Clutch Clangs...

I've finally gotten the truck quiet enough (by fixing the exhaust manifold leak and putting the correct breather on the carb), that I can hear a relatively loud clang (metal on metal sound) when i push the clutch all the way to the floor. this happens with engine running or truck parked and engine off. the clutch seems to work fine and i have the 1" pedal freeplay at the top before it starts disengaging the clutch.
is this normal and i just couldn't hear it before or does this mean i gotta do some work on the clutch area now?

The key is that it does it with the engine off too. The clutch z-bar is probably hitting something as you push down the clutch - usually it hits the exhaust pipe. The clutch spring can also make a noise somewhat similar to the untrained ear.

Have someone press the clutch pedal while you look at the clutch linkage from underneath.

vaughn, you were right! thanks much. the bar is hitting a part of the fender thats riding ontop of the frame member. i don't know if its supposed to be there but i also wouldn't know how to remove it so i'll leave it. maybe i can put some rubber on top to cushion it or stop pushing the pedal in all the way. thanks again.
