My kid's carseat has been held in the middle of the seat by a lap belt, but now he's pretty much too big for that car seat. I like him to be in the middle because he can't get the door open, but do not intend on strapping him in with just a lap belt. I found this harness that was made for school busses that seems like a possibility. Actually, I don't know what to do, but the truck is going to become much less fun if I can't figure something out. Anyway, anyone ever tried this or have any opinions? E-Z-ON Harness Linky Thanks. | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,185 Moderator | Moderator Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,185 | No, I haven't tried that. It looks to be quite secure. When I was a kid, we were all in the pick up box. | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 51 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 51 | Yeah. We did that, too. I even remember riding down Pikes Peak with a friend in the back of a truck when I was pretty young. But that's not gonna fly now. Maybe I like my kid better than my dad liked me. | | | | Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 23 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 23 | The harness looks pretty sturdy but the weak link may be your stock seat. Does your seat back fold forward?
If you feel your seat will stand up to the demands of the harness during heavy breaking or an accident than go for it.
Call the manufacturer. I'm sure they'd be happy to answer any questions or concerns you have. | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 136 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 136 | I wouldn't care too much if it folds forward, as long as my kid doesn't fly out the windshield. Your kid won't go any further forward than what you will. | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 51 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 51 | I actually think that's a pretty good point. I wish there was something like this that anchors to the floor. They have one there for "special needs kids" for passenger cars. I'm not sure what the difference is, but that harness looks a little too intense for what I would expect him to be trapped in and still be somewhat comfortable. I don't know, dang it. This is the best looking solution I've found so far. | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 4,886 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 4,886 | I work in the school bus garage here in town and install harnesses all the time. We have a few booster seats installed now that might work. They look like a seat you would use at a stadium, just a simple foam back and bottom, but hook up much like the one pictured. The foam raises the kids up so they can see out and it lets the belts work a little better. http://www.wcpsa.com/Downloads/CRSs%20for%20School%20Buses.pdfSee the link for some more options. The seat folding over could be a problem, but I doubt it, you would be there to stop it from going to far. I will have the same delema once my 55.2 is done. My kids will be 7 and 9 but I still don't feel safe with just a lap belt. Oh, and not only do I have the shift cane sticking up but a shift lever for the transfercase. Definitely don't want the seat folding forward on those!
