Hi just got me a 305 and as with most older engines its in need of cleaning "and before someone suggested having it cleaned" i don't have a cherry picker and its a major feat to move it around, anyway i have always used engine degunk to clean past engines is there something better out there or is that still pretty much the best stuff

Daniel,

If you are talking about Gunk engine cleaner, it certainly will do a good job of externally cleaning a greasy engine. My only objection to this particular brand (Gunk) is the smell and how it attaches itself to everything and everyone and persists for months! Worse than a skunk in my estimation.

I used a solution used for cleaning paint brushes. I would scrape, brush on and scrape again. It did such a good job that the casting started to rust.

Hi Daniel,

I used this stuff , it doesn't smell as bad as Gunk, it's totally water soluble and environmentally safe (keeps the tree huggers happy!) wink
Joking apart, it's good stuff and I've used it for most de-greasing on my truck, including the gas tank.
I hope this helps

Jock,

Not to rain on anyone's parade, least of all the tree huggers, but as soon as that environmental friendly cleaner cleans the junk off your motor, it's no longer environmentally friendly...it's full of grease, oil, gas and whatever roadkill it has successfully washed off your motor. So much for 'green'! smile

Yeah, well at least the "stuff" is eco friendly and everyone already knows all us old gearheads don't give a toot about trees or critters anyway. wink We only believe in burnin' out, burnin' down and drinkin' beer and chasin' girls. Probably all conservatives too....oh-oh!

I understand that Stuart, I don't just let all the cr*p flow down the nearest drain,in fact where I live we have a natural reed bed system for all 'grey water'.
We do not use any detergents/soaps in our house that will damage the environment.
It's a specific requirement of all the households where I live.
I was just saying the POR is much less aggressive than some of the stuff out there! thumbs_up
I did not mean to offend anyone.

I like using "Foamy Engine Brite". I don't remember who makes it.

I just go to the local car wash, spray a couple of cans on the engine and under the hood, and then use the "engine clean" option on the pressure wand to rinse it off. Then I spray some straight Simple Green on what's left, and use the wand some more. If you did a god job sealing off any openings to the engine, you can use a higher pressure setting on the wand.

The oil/water seperator at the carwash will do what it's supposed to do.

All this is on a cold engine (vehicle on a trailer, or a very close car wash).

I use with great success is any common oven cleaner (Easy-off)
Apply it and wait - oh yeah, wear rubber gloves cause it's caustic.
