This weekend while adjusting my valves on my 228, I noticed a real lack of oil anywhere up top. There was some, but not like I expected. I've got good oil pressure at the guage. I seem to remember something about a fix for this, some old timer's trick. Any body got any ideas? Thanks!

If the 228 is like the 270, there is a small oil line that enters the head on the front left that feeds oil to the rockers through a passage in the head up through the mounting foot. Mine was clogged at this fitting. Took it apart and cleaned. Good flow after that. Good luck.

I just took my fitting off and sure enough, it was plugged up. I cleaned it out and re assembled it, started truck with valve cover off and cound tell that there was more oil than before, but still not alot. How much oil should be splashing around in there anyway? It is like I could drive without a valve cover and only get a little mess. When I took the line off, I started truck to check oil volume at the line, and there was plenty spurting out.

I think the orofice in the fitting is pretty small. Mine has to run a good 30 sec. or so before I see oil up top. I believe it has to fill the rocker arm shaft first and then it comes out around the arms on the shaft. There is an overflow about middle of the r. arm shaft that flows after the shaft fills up. Its not excessive but you can see oil running at all arms around shaft. I HOPE thats the way its supposed to be. If it sprayed all over I think it would leak out of the valve cover vents.

I don't think they put a lot of oil on top. I know the oil filter only filters about a 1/3 of the oil if that. Don't make the mistake of changeing one of the lines to a larger one to get more oil. You may get more oil in one area, but will most likely lose it in another. These lines are engineered so that you get the right amout of oil in each needed area without loss of oil pressure. Just some food for thought. Cecil.....
