For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 137 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 137 | Okay,my Grumman 292 2ton with dually rear end may have had another rear end {or tranny} installed, changing the final drive ratio. Reason I say that is a PO put stickers on the speedo, showing a higher new speed, ie 30mph indicated equals 40mph on the road. Sure would like to run into one of those roadside automated radar signs for verification.
Problem is, I dont like the rpm the engine has to turn on the road. At approximately 60mph, the engine is running just over 3000rpm. Of course 1st gear of the 4 speed tranny is absolutely useless. Sure would be nice to run 60 at about 2K or so!
Is there a component I should be watching for to solve the high rpm/useless 1st gear situation? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | Those roadside signs are great, aren't they? The ones that I have seen are solar powered, quite amazing. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 137 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 137 | Sure beats finding the cycle officer with the handheld laser for speedo verification {and random taxation}! | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 1,424 ODSS President | | ODSS President Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 1,424 | Borrow a hand held or dash mount GPS,gives constant MPH.

Maybe a Clark 5 speed with Overdrive, and possibly an NV4500. Of course you could get a gear venders overdrive to fit between the transmission and the rear axle. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | You can match the odometer reading against the mile markers on the freeway & check the speedo. If the odometer matches the speed will be real close. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. That Gear Vendors OD would more than double my total vehicle cost! Not in the cards.
