Hi Fellow Stovebolters,
I am working on a 1946 Chevrolet model DS 1-ton Panel truck. I want to change the gear ratio in the rear end from its present 5.14 ratio to a higher 3.90 or 4.11 ratio. The research I've done tells me they used the same rear end in 1946-1960 Chevy 1 ton trucks. Can anyone tell me if this is a Dana rear end and if yes what model? This unit has a pumpkin that can be removed as well as a rear cover plate.
Thanks in advance!

It's a Eaton rear end. A pumpkin from a 68-72 3/4 ton should swap out directly.

You could find a 4.10 or more likely a 4.76, 3.90 will be near impossible to find.

I've got a 46 DS pickup, where you at in California? You could check out my T5 behind a 235. I decided to keep the 5.14 rear end and use a .63 o/d. Works out to be a nice combo.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the reply. I like that idea. I have a 235 engine also .....and I could still have the low ratio if needed. I started looking for a 1967-72 3/4 ton rear end today.....just may have found one. I live in San Juan Capistrano,CA ( southern CA). I did find that the 4.76 is easy to find....but am holding out for a 4.10

Hey Brian,

Also ping Dave Murry out in Florida. He has a DS Suburban that he just did a full rear end swap. It costs a bunch more but you'll get to pick the ratio that you want.

If you keep at it you'll eventually find a 4.10, best of luck.

Greg
