hey guys, i have been lurking for a couple of weeks because i am getting a 56 2ton and have been doing some research.

ive hunted through the gallery several times, google image searches, and posted up in other forums and so far i have really only found resto's and survivors.

has anybody modded out a some of the bog bolts with newer big axles? disk brakes? big deisel motors? custom flat beds?

i have seen lots of $$$$$ c.o.e's that are dedicated show haulers. but most of those are just 73+ dually frames.

i love the conventional cab trucks, especaily the wreckers.

i have some more dumb newb ??? that i will save for later but i was hoping to get some more ideas to run with for now. thanks.

grig has the air start detroit :jealous: and i would like to run a 453 or 6v53. im am looking at bus air bag suspensions and medium duty hydro disk brake axles, i would also like a 3126 cat and a nv5600 but thats wishful thinking.....

chop it,
shorten it,
lower it,
put a fifth wheel on it,
put a big block in it,
make the bed a low boy trailer,
just for starters,
do it & send photos

Look for Grigg with his Diesel and HeavyHauler (he spells it funny) for his big block powered hauler. Those are two I can think of who I know have posted lots of pictures.

Sounds like my truck project, although I haven't gotten to the flat bed yet; it is one the list.

Start walking through junkyards looking for axles and parts, take a tape measure.

Here's a tech tip with some ideas for axle swaps http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/

Welcome indeed!

With Grigg as my sensei, I am just starting a diesel upgrade (4-53T) to my '48 Chevy 2-ton (SWB dump) and using his truck as a pattern. Not doing the air starter, though ...

I'll be posting a blog in the Tech Tips Project Trucks section when we start actually putting stuff together. I'm starting with another SWB 2-ton frame so I can use the truck while we do all the driveline mods. Then, when the frame is ready, we'll just swap the sheet metal and the dump and be done.

It is already a lot of work! Just assembling the parts! But so far, so fun! If you go the Detroit Diesel route, you need to take a deep breath first -- I'm still wondering what I'm getting myself into. wink

I appreciate the positive responses from all, and you are right there is no such thing as over powered. I still got a lot work left to do, but I think it will be worth it.

I'll try and get some better pics. tomorrow when I move it out of the shop. I'll email you a few.

You email the next chapter(s) of your story to editor@stovebolt.com(Peggy)
They will accept high resolution images also, so attach a few to your email.

Or you could write up the story in the DITYgallery. There you will need to link to the pics, instead of posting them directly in the story.

Just with that motor... alone will be something....

I hope the rest of the truck can match what you started.

I to can not wait to see the finished products....

That is down right awesome. I ran out of room between my rails to do that length of engine but I am rodding a 1953 COE, engine behind the cab 350 v8 with 4l80e tranny and 15 inch driveline. '91 dually.

The d-shaft is right at 14" on my truck. I re-used the factory slip yolk portion of the original COE shaft so it wouldn't bind with suspension travel.

Wow! Sounds like fun.
That'll be a pretty tight fit, but manageable in a 56 I think.

Does it have a turbo?
Is the transmission an OD?
I ask because for the effort involved to install a 6V53, and it's weight you really want the turbo. A non turbo 6V53 has got the same oomph as a 4-53T, which is lighter and a good bit smaller, making it usually the better choice between the two. Obviously if the 6V53 has a turbo and it fits the truck then that's a good choice too.
You'll likely need an OD transmission and or some pretty fast gears (low 3.xx) to make it enjoyable on the highway.

Got any pictures yet?

i dotn have a good pic yet.

its a 1:1 no o/d clark.

with the 40" otr tires i would be good f0r 65 at about 2300 with 5.13:1, which is what i am looking for because i have a line on a f450 front drive axle with disks and 10 lug.

the 6v is a N motor with no turbo but it has a higher compresion that a turbo motor with out the turbo.

it has 45 injectors in it now and i am also getting some 65's. my buddy who is setting me up ran the same 65's in his turbo'd 453 and its was plenty of go power. i might add a turbo or 2 later but not going to plan on it for anytime soon.

2 Ton, here is a very helpful website for calculating mph / gear ratio, etc.

http://www.wallaceracing.com/calcmph.php

Personally, I prefer the 6V53 over the 453 but they are a little wider and heavier.

And louder eek

The truck I had with a 6V53 and twin turbos was a lot of fun to drive, and very useful, but sure was loud, and fuel economy was nothing special.
I think I'll like my 4-53T, but on occasion I'll miss the HP that the 6V53T had.

Check out some pictures of a 6V53T in a 61 F350 http://community.webshots.com/user/Grigg3 and a poor video

I like this gear calculator http://www.onlineconversion.com/bigger_tires.htm

Looks pretty clean!

Few things I noticed right off:
1, Remote oil filter, if you use it the book calls for minimum of 1" flex hose and the matching fittings. Also the filter housing looks undersized, you would want this Detroit housing, and the much larger filter http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2559057530080251109rweveK
Or you could swap the remote adapter for a spin-on filter housing right on the block.
2, The water outlets on the heads should have thermostat housings http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2703896310080251109gPjxtT
3, Didn't see any fuel filters, but ether way, if you want the spin on type the housings are approx $30 each new, you need a primary (before the fuel pump) and a secondary (after the fuel pump).

Looks like fun,
Grigg

the oil filter setup is 1". for now i will leave it till i figure out where i will have the best access and clean up mounting spot.

there is a large spin on fuel filter and factory setup post fuel pump and there is a small 5/16" off the shelf fuel filter pre pump. you can see it sitting on top of the motor in both pics.

what i would like to find is the air shut off that it is supposed to have, my inlet looks just like it but its not. i have a huge 8v71 90* 6"diam but i think it looks mhe:/.

one of the tstat housing got broken when the motor go tipped years ago, my buddy didnt have the other on hand. the pipes were setup strictly for stand running and are there just to keep the highest possible water level, they are not permenent.

i was able to get it out, i had to take the trans off and with my lift as high as it would go i had to roll the stand out of the back of the truck and out from underneath the motor. once the stand was off i had all the weight and it held fine, it just wouldnt go any higher to pick it off the stand. the top of the motor from the ground was over 7'.

You might check with these folks for your air shut off. http://www.powerlinecomponents.com/partscat.htm

If you need I can send you some detailed pictures of the shutoff on my 6V-53. It sits right on top of the blower and is spring loaded. The other 6V-53 I have came out of a military APC and uses Halon gas injected into the intake as an emergency shut down.

Sounds like you had fun getting it unloaded without killing yourself, been there myself a time or two. Recently bought a 4000 lb. forklift off of Craigslist for $900.00, should have done it years ago.

So do you have to take 30" out of the frame, or just relocate the spring hangers? Looks like your moving right along with the project.

im just going to push the axle forwards and remount the hangers. i would rather do that that cut and splice and create a potentail weak spot in the frame.

That looks good!

Was it any trouble to move the spring hangers forward?
Do you have crossmembers at the hangers tyeing the left side to right side like before?

Looks like your pinion angle might have changed because of the tapered frame rails, you'll want to check and correct that when you get the engine and transmission in there.
