I have a leak in the front of my 46 1/2 ton pickup 4 speed transmission. I was pulling the engine so I thought I would take care of this problem as well. Thinking there would be a typical seal to replace, I found nothing but a thin paper gasket between the bearing retainer and transmision housing. Those who are familiar with this transmission know that there is a 3/8" hole in the side of the retainer neck. It has the gasket to seal against the housing but is there another seal that keeps the gear oil from coming out of the hole in the neck of the retainer or out the end of the retainer around the splines? Is it correct that the hole should be at the top when reinstalled??? thanks! slowgoer

I'm not a transmission guru by any means, but the cutaway of this box does appear to have that hole pointed down...directly at the ground. There is no seal, there is a oil slinger immediately in back of the bearing that keeps oil from running out the clutch gear when the rig is running.

If the transmission is overfilled, or the truck is parked on a VERY steep incline, nose down, it can leak.

I don't know about the 46 but in the 48 to 52 manual, the 4 spd is to be filled to 1/2" below the fill hole, cold. This level will make a difference.

This old stuff was pretty crude. There is no seal. The hole should go down. It drains off before it gets to the clutch. Keep the level down below the fill plug.
