The 81 3/4 ton rear end will be wider than the 46 rear. The newer rear is 62 to 64 inches wide. New spring perches will be needed as well.
Along with the rear end, the you would need to change the tranny to make it all go together.
If you are running a truck with box and fenders, the 81 rearend may not clear your fenders too well.

I agree the '81 rear will be a little wide however. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 1,775 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 1,775 | I've found that a rearend out of a Dodge or Ford van is just about a perfect fit for my 54. The Ford is slightly wider, but nothing to speak of. The Dodge is only about 2 inches wider at most, which is only and inch per side. More than enough room between the fenders. Not for sure on the truck axles but I'm pretty sure they're a little wider even yet. The van axles will generally have more road friendly gears too. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 158 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 158 | I measured the 81 3/4 ton rearend and its 1 1/4 inchs wider than the factory rearend. So I dont think I will have any problems. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 1,775 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 1,775 | Sounds good. I haven't measured any trucks. I'm looking for a 3.55 or 3.73 gear, they plentiful in the van world whereas trucks typically are 4.11 or lower. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 158 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 158 | The axle I found has 3.73 gears in it. The axle came out of a single cab short wheelbase truck. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 1,775 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 1,775 | | | |
