While attempting to remove the lifters, I get them up about 3/8 of an inch, when I rotate the motor on the motor stand, with the rockers facing the floor, all the lifter drop evenly the same 3/8". Am I correct in assuming that the cam shaft must be removed and the lifters drop down towards the pan to be removed? Can the solid lifters be replaced w/hydraulic ones? Before that only the powerglide equipped blocks were. The lifters come out through the top, they don't drop back into the pan. There is a ridge of crud/gunk that has accumulated where the lifter doesn't slide in the bore. You must grab the lifter with pliers or something and scrape the junk off as you pull the lifter up and out!

If so, both cam and lifters should be replaced. A good lifter will have a slight convex shape on the bottom where it rides the cam, taller in the middle than the edges. This, plus the lifter riding slightly off-center on the cam lobe causes it to spin as it lifts, equalizing the wear pattern. Flat-bottomed or cupped-out lifters are worn out. Check the bottoms with a straightedge like a machinist's 6-inch rule.
