While chasing down an exhaust leak, I find that the exhaust/intake gasket set comes with 2 additional gaskets and an o-ring{?}

The 2 additional gaskets appear to fit between the intake and exhaust manifold, directly under the carburetor, and where I suspect the leak is. One is a full sheet gasket, while the other is a perimeter gasket; both have the same outer shape.

How do these install? Self explanantory when I get in there?

i used the perimeter one so it would heat the carb better. i don't know if that's the difference. i asked several people on the reason for the 2 years ago and never got a good answer. i will watch this thread and hope to find out. maybe if you live in a warmer climate you use the full sheet one. by the way if you do get this milled put this gasket in first and tighten them together after they are mounted to engine. do this before you take it to machine shop and don't take it apart to remount like the shop manual says. good luck and hope i didn't steer yu wrong on which one to use, surely someone will knoe the reason. hr

I have used the solid gasket before because I was out of the others. When I changed it later for some reason, the center was burnt out of it. The exhaust was just to hot for it to hold up with some sort of material behind it. It must be for some real odd ball intake that doesn't require heat. Joe

I take it you are working on a 63 up 6 cyl. The heavy trucks had an exhaust manifold that is almost closed in the area between them. It used the full gasket. The smaller trucks used the perimeter one.

Thank you sir! Judging by what I have found so far, I hesitate to repeat what past mechanics have done.

wrenchbender, i have really been interested because i have wondered about this for years. so if the ex manifold is mostly closed at the top you should use the full sheet? is this the 2 1/2" dump manifold on bigger trucks that's kind of sought after? i have never seen one that's closed but haven't had one of the bigger ex manifolds. hr

Yes it had a 2 1/2 in opening & it seems like it was nearly closed in where the manifolds go together. I used to throw brand new ones away.

According to the instruction sheet that came with my Felpro gasket set, the perimeter gasket is for use with gasoline engines, while the sheet gasket is for use with LPG engines.
