On my truck I took the unit out and it appeared the gears were stripped. On closer inspection I noticed that they were not stripped but the gear that drives the stainless windshield slide was able to move away from the drive gear. It appears when you move the gear to lower the windshield it wants to move that gear away from the drive gear. Over time this creates an oblong hole that allows the bolt that holds the window gear to move away from the drive gear.
I just found some scrap aluminum and cut a small shim and put it in the oblong hole to hold the gears tight. It worked like a charm.
