The guy who had previously owned it said he was driving it and while driving it he heard a loud snap and then the engine started running ruff and would not idle. After the loud snap he said it made a thumping noise  . He told me that when he would put the air breather on the carb it would muffle the sound. He has not ran the truck for over 5 years since that happend. I recently purchased the truck and I would like to fix the origanl motor were should I start. You can see just about everything with those removed.

Pulling the valve cover is the first thing to do. You may have a broken rocker or a dislodged pushrod.
They are a great motor to work on. I really enjoyed rebuilding mine and it now runs just as smooth as can be. I was offered a good running 235 but there is no way that I wanted to give up my 216. | | |
