I just recently read that it is recommended that a water pump adapter that uses the earlier '41-54 water pump is better than either buying the shortened '55-62 water pump or shortening the same pump shaft yourself. One reason is that it better aligns the water pump to the center of the radiator for better cooling. Another reason is that the earlier pump already has the correct pulley diameter for the correct ratio to the harmonic balancer pulley(if the one from the original is used). The third reason is that if you need a new water pump, then you can just simply bolt the new one on instead of modifying another one again. What do you fellow stovebolters think?

If you use the plate, and you ever have to replace the water pump, you cannot simply unbolt the old one and bolt on the new one. Jim Carter also sells the plates and he will send instructions, if you ask. I'll see if I have the instructions in a format that I can post a link to.
