I just recently read that it is recommended that a water pump adapter that uses the earlier '41-54 water pump is better than either buying the shortened '55-62 water pump or shortening the same pump shaft yourself. One reason is that it better aligns the water pump to the center of the radiator for better cooling. Another reason is that the earlier pump already has the correct pulley diameter for the correct ratio to the harmonic balancer pulley(if the one from the original is used). The third reason is that if you need a new water pump, then you can just simply bolt the new one on instead of modifying another one again. What do you fellow stovebolters think?

However, your statement "The third reason is that if you need a new water pump, then you can just simply bolt the new one on instead of modifying another one again." is a simplification. If you use the plate, and you ever have to replace the water pump, you cannot simply unbolt the old one and bolt on the new one. The plate comes off with the water pump and would have to be attached to the new water pump (which is not a difficult matter; but, it is not simply a bolt-off and bolt-on of the water pump). | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 66 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 66 | where can you buy them? does this require holes to be drilled in the head and tapped? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | 235/261 water pump adapter plate Search on eBay for: 235 pump plate Ask for instructions. Jim Carter also sells the plates and he will send instructions, if you ask. I'll see if I have the instructions in a format that I can post a link to. Two holes have to be drilled and tapped into the block. | | |
