I need to know if the side rails are spot welded on and if so do new rails have to be? we're building a daily driver not a show truck.

Yes the side angles are spot welded originally, but replacements may be bolted or welded. Just remember they are an integral part of the bed assembly and connect the bedsides to the floor and cross sills, so angles must be securely attached.
