I just got the old 235 started and it's running great. I've got the battery on the ground and I'm running cables to the starter post and ground strap. I've bypassed the ignition switch and have hot-wired the coil directed to the starter post while I'm working on the engine (the fenders and hood are off). When I shut the engine down after about five minutes, the coil was too hot to touch. Anyone have an idea why it's cooking? It's an old coil that was on the 54 when I found it.

The typical cause of a hot coil would be leaving the key on while the engine wasn't running. It's strictly a deal of current continually flowing through the coil...it wasn't made for that.
Could you have had it powered while you were doing other chores, maybe for awhile before you started the rig? When the engine isn't running, there should be no power to the coil.

I don't think a minute would do it...maybe 10 minutes, I don't know. The coil is a transformer with no moving parts. If you run juice through it continually, it will get hot.
The good thing about it is that it will self-diagnose..it will continue to work, or it will fizzle.
