After the distributor is removed so I can prime the oil pump with a drill, can I just put the distributor back in or do I have to go through the process of bringing #1 to TDC before replacing it? Thanks

As long as you mark where the distributor was before you removed it you should be able to just drop it back in.

True...but you will have to use your long screwdriver to align the oil pump slot so the distributor will drop back in all the way to the marked position.
