56 stepside,
Oh! This opens up a new can of worms then. I have enclosed a link to a site that has a '55 wiring diagram. That's as near as I can get. That diagram won't show wiring for an alternator, as a generator was the soup-de-jour back then.
Basically, if you are using a internally regulated three wire alternator, commonly called an SI unit, the wiring is pretty easy. Keep in mind a single wire alternator makes it even easier.
The large BATT wire, which is the charge wire from the alternator must hook into the system to charge the battery. This is usually done through the ammeter then on to a connection at the solenoid or starter switch if you have a stomp starter. The starter switch isn't the key switch...it the switch located on top of the starter when using the foot stomper style starter.
The plug on top of the alternator is referred to as the DA plug and consists of two wires. The case should be embossed with a #1 and #1 next to each wire position.
#2 wire can wrap around and get connected to the same large lug the BATT wire is connected to.
#1 wire needs to be powered when the key is ON and engine running. This is accomplished through the key switch. This connection must be isolated from IGN when the key is turned OFF.
Does your rig have a 'idiot light' and do you plan to use it. This wire (#1) can run thorough that lamp and will let you know the status of your charge system...just like it did with the generator.
If you are just getting started with your wiring, you will have more questions. More knowledgeable folks will pop in with additional help, so be sure to ask when in doubt.
Take a look at the site I linked. Study how the system works and it will make things more clear...hopefully. Good luck
