The truck's been running great, however, went out and started getting a thumping noise in 4th. I thought it might be the babbets going, but maybe it's the tranny. Cant just pull it apart as I drive it. Any ideas? | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 | Hey, you're in Victoria!!!! My daily driver's starter crapped out. Apparently there was like a quart of oil in it.... And to think, every thousand miles, I was lifting the oil cup cap and putting in two drops of oil... My rear main has leaked since the dawn of time, and right now I'm fixing it in the drive way. You could easily be like me, drop the oil pan and check the clearances with plasti gauge. It's a nice day to do it. I'd look around for a spare tranny, that you could rebuild while you drive the other.
I'd check through the drive line though first. The u joints and such. Maybe it's nothin? I've always thought I'd have spare parts rebuilt, and ready to go on. However, I've not mastered it yet. I seem to have a number of things that need rebuilt, that have not been as of yet. | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 63 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 63 | You never have enough money or time with these. Working in a parking lot is never fun either. My tranny leaks, but not as bad since I got some 160w oil that was called for. New stuff is too thin. I'd like to narrow down the noise before I start pulling things apart. Can get very expensive to hit and miss. What you driving? | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 | 1950 Chev 1 ton. http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd45/HomeCrafter/IMGP0952.jpgIt's sitting in the driveway as I type. Oil pan off, I'm replacing the lower rear main seal, and cleaning out the sludge. Back together tomorrow. Hopefully this will keep the oil from spraying into the starter again. It was much cleaner in there than I thought it would be. My engine was rebuilt in around 1990, and then the truck went through a few owners who were not particular about the engine, and it sat for years and years. I switched to thicker gear oil as well. And thicker engine oil. I'm running 40wt in the engine now, and everything seems much quieter. | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 94 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 94 | Good thing about oil leaks from previous owners, they prevent rust.

I bit the bullet this summer and bought them from Kanter, they are the Unity 6v lights. They cost more to buy directly from Unity, but by the time Kanter screws you with shipping... But, I use them nearly everyday, now if only I could afford a pair for my car... They are great in the fog though, and we get allot of that here. | | | | Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 1,927 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 1,927 | Mr. Lang - that is a great looking truck. Sweet! I wish mine looked half that good.
