My question is do any members have any of this model restored? unrestord or just own? These where made from 1960 to 1980. I have a GMC T 9500,1972 ex firetruck pumper which I stripped to cab and chassis. (fire body beyound repair pump cracked other issues). Mine is the higher raised cab ( extra step and also extra piece on the fender) that was the body for the V-12 and or a diesel engine. I've got a V-8 637 gas engine which was built to replace the V-12. I've sent some pictures to the gallery which I hope get posted soon. Just interested in seeing if any members own one of these.

There was one for sale by a Fire Dept in Wisconsin a while back that sounds something like it. I was trying to help them sell it and might still have some pictures on file if you would like to see them. By memory, it was a '72 GMC 9500 Cabover, 637 V-8 Gas, 5-Speed, Air Brakes and it also had the Raised-Up cab.

I sent you a picture of the truck. I remembered wrong on the year, it's a '69.

By the way, I used to drive a '71 9500 Conventional Cab with a 637 Gas.

Thanks Bill, I received the picture it looks like it just came out of service great shape. Do you remember what kind of mileage you got with that 637?? I heard a fellow that drove a tandem back in that era got 2 mpg?

We made the switch from gas to Diesel in the mid 60's. 2 to 3 mpg for gas was quite common. And that was going loaded one way and empty the other way. I experienced even less than 2 loaded both ways or fighting a strong side wind. A Cummins Diesel would do 3 1/2 to 4 under the same conditions. We cut the drag axle off one of the models similar to the white one in spanky's photos to use as a yard truck. I think it took a couple of gallons of gas to build up air pressure to move a trailer. We sold the thing for scrap iron. I wish I had kept it. It had a good 637 and 5 speed over.

The '71 9500 that I drove was a 20 Ft Flatbed Dump Tandem. We had our own gas pumps at the yard and I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to mileage, but I remember the mechanic telling me that it got about 3 to 5. Refilling the truck was also my job and I don't remember the truck using an unreasonable amount. There again, the truck was fairly new. I would definitly rebuild the carb to expert precsion and super tune the engine, if you have mileage problems.

Here are a few of my ex firetruck before after and of the 637 V-8 engine (10.4 liter). I''ve rebuilt the carb. with new float, recored the rad, points/condenser/fuel filter and many hours so far to remove the pump and firebody. New few tanks and battery box in the spring (when it warms up). Lots of fun so far.

Thanks, I hope to have it on the road this summer at least as a cab and chassis. I'm planning on building a garage 24'x40' also this summer so truck time might be at a premimum (hard to work in the rain and cold). As for the gallery, I sent pics. and info on Dec 20th but I guess they are bogged down. Fly off to Florida for 2 weeks on Monday morning I hope to spot a few of these old cabovers down there.

Well here is my garage almost finshed stated in October and finished for the season last weekend Nov 30th. Will put windows and walls on the sides this spring/summer. Did all the work myself/ with my 12 year old son. It was alot of fun. Also picked up another truck for free along the way. 1985 C70 GMC with a 17' flat deck it cost me $800.00 to get saftied for the road and some of my time. I may finish it off to pull my 72 cabover??? You will notice in the pictures that the garage that was supposed to used for trucks is not, it houses my 5th wheel camper and my tandem dump trailer, mean while the trucks sit out side for another season. Planing to build a 30'x10' carport out the one side this spring for the 2 trailers. The garage is 14'x40'.

Steve, NAPCOMan and Mike B are both new owners of that style COE. And I've driven the one Bill Alderson (KCCaveman) owns in Independence, MO that's V-12 powered (what a kick!). Neat trucks.

Here are a few work in progress shots from the summer, frame painting/battery box installation and the mounting of the gas tank brackets and tank also removed the 3 air tanks for cleaning and painting, still lots of work to be done. Also a shot from the cab of my truck that I drive, winter is now here in eastern Ontario.
