The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Painting over Rust?

I'm working on my 65 Chevy weekly driver, a little at a time... no garage to paint inside. I've read many posts on POR 15 and the applications. Many suggest to sand blast, sand or grind off the rust. I thought POR was "paint over rust"? I'm looking to clean up under the bed and paint the frame and suspension. Any advice?

use a wire brush & puty knife at least to knock down rust
yes these types paints encapsulate rust so little air gets to the surface
no produce is a sure cure except at best, blast. bare good solid metal is what you want

well if I was in your shoes, I would purchase Eastwoods 2 part rust killer and follow up with either there rust encapsulator or the por 15.
both after the rust converter will work.
But I would first hit it with the rust convertor before I coated with anything.

I just did a grand experiment. I have a Big Tex car hauler that, in it's previous life, was overloaded hauling a backhoe. Bits of concrete everywhere, rust, brown paint, red primer, new fenders starting to rust, etc. I didn't feel like putting too much work into it so I blew most of the loose stuff off with an air nozzle, ground off the cement on the flat pieces ( didn't even think about it on the diamond plate!) And went over the rest real quick with an orbital.

I replaced the ball receiver and other bent up pieces of steel. Blew everything off, ran laquer thinner over the new steel. Coated everything with Eastwoods Encapsulator except for 5 feet of rail 'cause I ran out of paint. I coated that with PPG's 2 part epoxy. The next day, I coated everything with a single stage PPG Olympic white to match my daily driver except for the diamond plate floor which will get a grip paint. I will be grip painting it tonight after work.

Then it will be time for the test of time. I'll let you know in a year or two or three how things are working out. The Suburban will be parked on top of it for a little while so I can move it around easier for working on it. The suburban, that is.

BTW, the cool thing is that I rewired, relighted it with some new LED lights. They look real good!!

I POR-15'd my frame and the underside of the cab in 2000 and it is holding up nicely.

I've been using Rustoleums "rusty metal primer" on my Binder, it goes on fairly thick and smooths out nicely. I'll eventually sand it off and use a "proper" auto primer and paint system (after the sheet metal work is finished!)
