I need a valid truck title to go with my 41 nearly restored truck. Have KY bill of sale and old KS title, but no good in NC.

Yes and Yes. Would LOVE to get a valid title from someone who would list me as buyer. Would save me an immense amount of trouble as I could go to DMV and get titled in NC.

Re process: Yes. I have a KY bill of sale and a Kansas title. Problem is, the former owner never titled the truck in KY after acquiring from KS relative. Gave me a bunch of paperwork to get a KY title, but NC will have none of it.

Talked to my state Senator who put me in touch with DMV. DMV will accept a bond of some sort, but not the KS title. Basically, DMV wants a signature from a now-deceased relative of 'my' seller.

Too complicated for me.

Did you try going back the KS to get a title? If you are talking about buying a title and pulling a serial number plate on your truck..my advice would be to take the hard way and get your truck titled. It might take a lot of work, but you know what you have, you have the supporting paperwork. The bond would only be for your purchase amount. If you take photos of your starting point to the DMV, they should confirm this. If you have a bill of sale and the title, it should be much easier than those who have nothing to start with.

Been there, done that, wore out the T-shirt. Look in Hemmings and find companies that specialize in getting titles. I got one for my 46, years ago, for about $125, but I am sure it cost more now. I got a title from Alabama signed over to me, a tax paid receipt and even an Alabama license plate. DMV had no problen with it. Otherwise you can post an insurance bond of twice the truck value, determined by DMV and then they hold the title for 2 years, before you get a clear title. They let you get plates, but do it like a lein on the title. You figure which is easier.

I just went through this process with my '49 Burb. Almost the exact circumstances you are encountering. NJ would not except an Arkansas title with a Kansas Bill of Sale...blah, blah. Anyway, I ended up going to Broadway Title in Birmingham, Ala for the paperwork necessary to get a title in New Jersey. No good! NJ DMV changed policy and wouldn't accept the paperwork from the Title company. Ended up having a friend in VA re-apply for the Broadway Title paperwork to title the truck in VA and the he sold me back the truck "on paper" with the VA Title and I was able to title it in NJ.
Check and make sure your state accepts Ala title paperwork! Cost me about $150. for Broadway Title, $100. for the State of Virginia title and $65. for the NJ title...plus enormous aggravation. Good luck.

Sounds like somebody signed the title over to someone, and that someone sold the vehicle to jones along with a bill of sale.

In most states, you don't legally own the vehicle unless it's your name on the front of the title.. if it isn't your name on the front of the title, you legally don't have the right to sell it or register it.

Thats why people who "float" titles ask the seller NOT to put a name in the "sold to" blank spot.

I've bought vehicles that had bounced around 7 or 8 different people.. with the original owners name still on the front, and their john hancock on the back.

If the "buyers" name is written in the blank on the back, he'd have to have that person title the truck, then sign it over.

Some states don't require a title for vehicles past a certian year.. just a bill of sale with the VIN number.. I think thats how the title agencys get around the no title thing, by getting a title in one of those states with a bill of sale, then transferring the new title to you.
