Hello all, My 50 steering gear box leaks the gear oil I install. My question is can I pack the gear box with wheel bearing grease? Does anyone sell an overhaul kit for these, pulling the colunm from the box looks like a bear!

Gear oil is too thin. Try searching all the forums on the words +penrite +cornhead

Rebuild kits are available - maybe someone else knows if that kit contains seals (if they are necessary).

Where does one normally purchase cornhead grease? I've check my FLAPS, and they have no idea what it is. I get a blank stare at Tractor Supply, too. I can order a $2.99 10 oz. tube of it online, but I'd have to pay 10 bucks shipping. No way.

The column doesn't separate from the box. Actually, they're not too bad to overhaul, but there are a couple of special tools needed to get it apart. Namely, a spanner whrench to get the end plug out. I got mine from Snap-On, wasn't too expensive. I ended up making my won gaskets, suing a sheet of gasket material and the old ones as a pattern. The seal was simply micd and matched at the flaps. I think we went with one that was actuallya few thou smaller id so it would fit tighter to the shaft.
If you tackle overhauling it yourself, either get a shop manual or print off the pages from Keith Hardys site to assist you.

Cornhead grease is available from any John Deere tractor dealer. Its got to be big tractors, lawn tractor dealers are clue less about combines! Joe

I second what Joe H said. But don't go to the John Deere dealer that deals in construction equipment. I went to the store that deals in trucks,tractors,backhoes, and the like. He didn't know JD made cornhead grease. The other store had cases of the stuff, and I think I paid less than 3 bucks a tube. And one tube will be way more than enough for your needs.

The John Deere lawnmower/tractor/atv place near me had no problem getting it for the next day. Unbelievable at $2.99 a tube. I found I needed more than one tube to fill the box?

And if you use a rebuild kit, the sector shaft seal included is junk. GM still makes the original.
