Could someone tell me what the cylinders should read on a compression tester?

Dry test first w/ the tester, take your cylinder readings, them squirt wd-40 or ?? to seal the rings better then test again. If the reading improves it's the rings, other wise it's the valve guides.

Oil smoke is blue, and if the rings are bad, the exhaust will puff smoke after coasting for a distance, and getting back on the gas. Fuel smoke is black, and causes a dark black, sooty deposit on the plugs. Oil fouling is black and greasy, and will form a hard deposit on the electrodes which foul it out.
Is the plug fouling uniform from one cylinder to another, or is one or more plugs getting fouled worse? Fuel fouling generally happens to all the plugs equally.
Edit: I just noticed you said the smoke is blue. If the compression tests low, and rises when oil is put into the cylinders, you need a ring job.

#48830 08/12/2005 12:41 PM | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 343 Member | | Member Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 343 | Did you do both the "Wet" and "Dry" compression test? BTW, To do a wet compression test you just need to squirt ~ 1 tsp of oil into the cylinders when you do the compression test.
