The single plane types, with all the runners coming off an open chamber right under the carb, is for high speed only operation. Dual plane manifolds give better low end torque.
I've had very good luck with the Comp Cams 260H High Energy cam. It's got a very slight idle lope, almost like a stock engine with one bad plug wire. It also works OK with stock compression pressure. The next step up, the 268H, has a noticeably lumpy idle, really should have a bit more compression than stock, and doesn't play well with a stock torque converter stall speed or power brakes.

Noisy as well. I like Isky, Crane and Lunati. Don't overcam it.
Follow instructions to the "T so you don't wipe out a lobe.

I know what I would run, but that's from a lot of trial and error, and my preferences may not be yours. Definitely go dual-plane with the manifold. You'll gain much bottom end compared to a single plane.
