I ran the number that was stamped on the engine (V0725GF). Turns out that its either a 1955 265, a 1957 283 or a 1965 283.. My guess is that its a 1965 283 because it has side mounts and not front mounts.. Dissappointing to say the least. Regardless, I now have a 283. My question is... how can I find out if this is a 4 bolt main other than getting the casting number or popping the pan off. I guy from work who used to dirt track with 283s said that there was a boss cast in the front of the motor on 283s with 4 bolt mains. This true? If so, where is it suppose to be? Anyway, no such animal as a four bolt 283. The four bolt SBC blocks were designed for engines that produced relatively high torque and HP. Therefore not necessary in a 283. hahaha
All kidding aside, as designed, the little mouse motors weren't prone to twisting the block and pukin' the crankshafts out. So, four bolt caps weren't really necessary. | | |

Only the 350, early 400, and '68-'69 302 ahd 4-bolt mains. There is a difference in the block casting for 4-bolt engines, the webs between the cylinders are thicker. Not all engines with the thicker webs are 4-bolt, however. They did build 2-bolt versions of those blocks, mainly for light truck use. They can be machined to accept them, though.

It's one of the best small blocks ever made. 3" stroke helps in mechanical wear and with the right tranny you can get 250 HP. I think it's better than the 327.
