I have a 292 that I'm installing a clifford water jacket intake and four barrel carb on and I don't need all the holes in the stock 292 valve cover for the smog tube. Guess I should keep a pvc port but that's about all. What is a good substitute to use. I'll have to look again in my inliners, 12 port newz as I seem to remember that some one makes a valve cover adapter so maybe I can fit a (216 or) 235 plain cover on, NO chrome. The present ebay alum cover is costly, besides I don't need all that flash and I'll paint it anyway. Anybody got a spare non chrome 235 cover for sale

You have to have crankcase ventilation. You need a pcv valve in 1 opening & a vent either going to the air cleaner or a ventilated oil cap. Nothing from a 235 will fit the 292. They are 2 different families of engines. smile

Realizing that 292 covers are different than 216 and 235.
That's why I mentioned the Inliners advertisement in 12 PORT NEWS http://www.merchantamerica.com/chevyhotrod6/index.php?ba=home

They make an adapter (I do not see it on the web site so call) for chevy two stud 216 valve covers to fit on a seven screw 194, 215, 230, 250 &292 heads. From what I now know is Larrowe & Sons Truck Parts in Sandy, Oregon. It also appears from the advert picture you can fit this over roller rockers !!!!
a shocking sleeper ??
but i'm still going to give them a call to be sure.

Landgon shows an adapter to place a 235 cover on the newer six. No picture online, but it is listed.

Langdon and Larrowe in Oregon both have adapters to use 4 bolt 235 covers on the later motors and I believe only Larrowe has one that works with the earlier 2 bolt versions.

Another option would be find a Mercruiser cover. It is a painted aluminum cover with a pcv hole and a twist on oil cap. They can sometimes be found on ebay.

You can buy a new Offenhauser cast cover from Langdon for the same price as the adaptor. Cast cover quiets any valve noise and seals really well. I have a Clifford on my 292, the cover weighs about 10 lbs. compared to a few ounces for the sheet metal cover.

I've been thinking of making an adapter to install an AD GMC valve cover on my 250 engine. More clearance for the roller rockers, and it would look cool. grin

I did a search and found this old thread because I remembered from years ago some/one of the vendors sold an adapter to put a 216 cover on a 230-292 engine. Might fool a novice, but no one with much Chevy 6-cylinder knowledge. Not considering the labor and expense it should be a good engine swap, and generally an improvement over a 216 or 235.

i used an offenhauser cover , and you can have the sheet metal one for the shipping cost, but it may be cheaper to buy a new one
