i also replaced the steering mast bearing and horn parts in the wheel. is there a way to use the relay in my harness with the
old horn button? as i see it now my options are wire the horn up just like gm did and call it good, add an ugly horn button,

It is the preferred way. Hook the wire from the button to the B term. on the relay. Hook a hot lead to the B term. Hook the wire from the horn to the H term. Ground the other term on the horn & make sure the relay is grounded. If you are running 6 volts you will need a 6 volt relay.

Is your horn also a '46 version...probably. If it has two terminals on it, one will have to be grounded permanently while the other will now get power through your new relay.
