This is probably a stupid question but...I have no idea what 3 bolt holes are for on the driver's side of the engine ('54 235). Nothing was attached to them when I got the truck. They're in an upsidedown triangle pattern. The upper 2 are about 9 - 10 inches from the front of the engine and 4 inches above the pan. The lower one is located below these 2 about 1 1/2 inches above the pan. Thanks

Do they look like this:

1953 side engine mounts

This block came out of a 1953 car with powerglide, the first 235 to have pressurized oiling. The holes here were for side engine mounts. I don't know if all blocks got the holes after that time or not. My 1957 Truck motor does not have them. I might hazard a guess that they are only on blocks for cars not trucks.

Those holes are for side engine mounts when the block is paired up with a Powerglide transmission in a passenger car. The PG had a rear mount that fit on a crossmember atr the rear of the transmission, and no bellhousing mounts like a 3-speed standard transmission. Hanging the engine/trans assembly by front and rear put too much stress on the bellhousing, so the front mount was moved to a mid-engine position. I'm restoring a 51 2-door hardtop with that mount setup right now.

Funny you ask . . . I had the same question! We're about to re-install a 216 (I think it's a '46) and I can't remember for the life of me WHAT mounted to those holes!!! I think - nothing.

The '56 Chevy 2-ton I pulled my Yard Dog's engine out of had side mounts.

I believe that all of the 1952-54 passenger cars had the side engine mounts being discussed. I had a 1953 Chevy 210 with a standard transmission and several 54 261s that all have the mounts. Some were not drilled and tapped. They are great mounts, but they take up a lot of space.
