I am an old Chevy person, but new to this group of vehicles. I recently bought a 66 Suburban with a straight six in it ( 292 according to the build sheet ). It seems to have been a service truck for a private company, and is quite plain. It is pretty much complete and original, but it does not have a Fan Shroud on it. The build sheet also says that it was ordered with the Heavy Duty Radiator, if this makes a differance. I assume that it should have had one, but I have seen no mention, or reproduction units for one. Did the six cylinders have a Shroud, and if so, is it differant from the V8 Shroud? Thank you for your help.

I can't say for sure but the 6 is longer and they both bolt up to the same trannys mounted to the same cross members. They have to be farther forward. The radiators mount the same. So if they use a shroud I'm bettin' it's different.

As far as the older vehicles, you have to remember that up until the late 50's early 60's, the passenger cars did not have shrouds. But I thought after this time period, that they started putting them on everything.

i just bought a 65 Chevy Suburban last nite and it has the 250-6 cyl motor and it does have a fan shroud in it, so they did make them for the in line 6-cyl motors. i will try to get a picture of it.

The six and V8 trucks/panels/burbs all had fan shrouds, as least in the 4-5-6 years. The fan shround is sized to the radiator, not the engine. That being said, the swamp cooler (heavy-duty) radiator coupled with the big 6 (292) had the V8 style radiator shroud.

Thank you for your response. My question now is, even though the build slip calls for a heavy duty radiator, how can I be sure it is still in the vehicle? Is there a number, size, something to look for? I noticed the other day that it is a Harrison Radiator, but is it the original, I'm not sure. Any suggestions?

Harrison was the factory supplier of radiators in the '60-'66 Chevy trucks and maybe other years, but I am not sure which ones. The large V8 radiator measures 25-1/2" wide x 22-1/2" tall x 3" wide and has HARRISON embossed on the top tank. It sits on the top flange of the radiator cross-member...the smaller six cylinder radiators sit on the lower flange of the radiator cross-member, between the frame rails.

To my knowledge, there are no model numbers embossed on the various radiators...I believe they are idendified by their top & bottom tank size, overall dimensions and number of cores. I did find the following part numbers and applications:

'63-'65 - (230)/Standard transmission Part#: 315560
'63-'66 - (283)/Standard transmission Part#: 3157071/3155062
'63-'66 - (292/327)/Standard transmission Part#: 3155105/3155061
'63-'66 - (230/292/283/327)/Automatic transmission Part#: 3155065

This information is pulled from the "Glenn Mitchell Collision Estimator Inc." "Part Number Service Guide", dated November 1, 1968, specific to the '63-'66 Pick-up, Cab, Panel & Suburban.
