Hello all, this is my first post... I love your site! So much great info here.

I'm looking at buying a 1971 C50 dump and I'm having some trouble determining the GVW. I actually have not been to see the truck in person yet, I've only seen it in photos and I've talked to the seller via phone. The seller says he can't find a tag anywhere on the truck that lists a GVW. He gave me the VIN, and I called a dealer and had them look it up, but all they could tell me is that the GVW is somewhere in the range of 15k-23k lbs.

I'm going to go see the truck in person and of course I'll look again for the tag listing the GVW, but just wanted to ask here to see if anyone has any other advice for how I might be able to determine the GVW for this truck if the tag is indeed missing.

Maybe I should start by asking, where is the GVW tag typically located in these trucks?

Thanks!!!

Welcome to the site.

The tag should be on the driver's door jamb on the back side of the cab, at the bottom.

Another way to tell is to see if the sticker is still on the inside of the glove box door. If it doesn't list the GVW, just add the front and rear axel ratings together.

Being a C-50 I'm going to guess it to be at or around 19,500.

Hi. I have a '71 C-50 dump. It has a tag on the drivers door jam that states the front axle is rated at 7,000 and the rear axle 17,000 so the GVW is 24,000. The tires are 8.25 x 20 on budd rims. Hope this helps.

That is interesting as the trucks that I have seen with a GVW of 24,000 are usually C-60's.

I would tend to agree with the second post. I have a 69 C-50 and a 67 C-50 and they are both rated at 19,500 lbs. The gross vehicle rating of a vehicle is not necessarily the gross weight ratings of both axles added together.

Bagman, I agree with rwoods. The tires/wheels make all the difference on how an axle is rated. C-50's could easily have a 5K front and a 15K rear and be rated as 18K GVWR with small tires.

Thanks to all for your replies.

When I went see the truck in person, I did find the tag on the driver's door jam. I was surprised to see that it too gave a range for the GVW. I expected a single number.

I decided to pass on buying this truck. It is in OK shape and in case it might be of interest to someone else here, here's the CL listing. (I have no relation to the seller or other interest in this sale).
