Question for the electrical guru's

My turn signals arent working correctly. If I initial turn the truck on, the turn signals work properly, as I transition from Park to Reverse to Nuetral to Drive, the flashing changes from steady to slow to fast to fast. Once I put it in drive and start moving and try to use the blinker, it flashes once then nothing. And I can change it from either left or right and I will still only get 1 flash then nothing. Also the Emergency blinker works perfectly.

From this point on, the blinker will not work properly no matter what, unless I shut the truck off and start it back up again, and it does this process all over.


I have changed the Turn Signal Switch, I have changed the Brake Light Swtich, these have not fixed the problem.

I assume the problem is a short. Is there anywhere in particular that I should look based on the syptoms?

Yep, what Cletis said, but I imagine you didn't know where to put it though and wanted help. I think it would be better to post this down in the Greasy Spoon part, someone there is always willing to help, and it doesn't affect other people trying to get help.

There is a spot just for your year range of truck.
It sounds like maybe the wires have been compromised in the column. When you shift, the power goes to a different lead at each position. Just a guess. Go to the "forums" tab (at top) from here.

What about the flasher?

do you have a multi functional switch?
turn, hi/lo, squirter?
you have an expensive switch there,, about $300.00
it has about a dozen + wires to it and some terminals and wires may be fried
I can't say that's happening to you but it's best to look at the switch.
that ain't fun.

I replaced the Wiring that goes to the switch.

The problem only occurs when I hit the brakes.

Is it a possibility a relay may be bad? How is pressing the brakes causing a short?

isolate......
look at the brake rod, pedal arm & see if you're pulling a wire and shorting it??

pull fuses and see what circuit is involved. when you pull that fuse and nothing happens at least you found those sets of wires involved. see you're wire diagram.

I have a '97 that is loaded with weird electrical do-dads, so I wouldn't be surprised if your '92 has some of the same! What I would check is the taillight assemblies themselves. They are probably plastic housings that require separate grounding which you might be achieving through the filaments of some of the other lamps which would make strange things happen.

I would take each side apart, verify the condition of each little bulb, replacing them if need be, and make sure all the ground wires are clean and secure.

If the plastic housings are bonded to the bed, the bed must be bonded to the frame. It's sort of a long shot, but it will take this question out of the equation. Good luck.

Tailight Assembly:

Blinkers are flashing slowly
Emergency Lights Work Normally

Reverse Lights dont work
Brake Lights dont work

What could cause this?

your emergency flasher is separate from your turn signal flasher. I would start by replaceing the turn signal flasher with a new heavy duty unit.

Then I would crawl under the truck and follow the wiring, you may have a bad ground in the back.

The reverse lights may be the ground, or they may be a bad reverse switch.

Also, if you have a bulb out the emergency flasher will still flash normally, however the turn signal flasher is not getting enough load to flash.

I replaced the drivers side circuit board, and all the bulbs and still no success.

Can yall give me some tips as to some good locations where I might find the short?

If this has trailer wiring or a hoppy put between the oem connector, remove it and check. Brake light voltage back feeding the turn signal switch is common on this type of add ons.
