Hello everyone,

I am fairly new here so forgive me if this is a strange question. I have a 1951 3100. Only had it a couple of months. Just above the back of the seat there is a rack mounted to the cab. I can't describe it very well other than to say it looks like a gun rack. I initially thought that maybe this was something that a previous owner hand put in but I have come across pictures of other trucks with the same type of rack. What was its purpose? Was it a factory option/dealer option? I am not planning on carrying any weapons but I don't want to remove it if it is original to the truck.

It would definetly been an aftermarket addition. There was no factory rack like that that I'm aware of. There is a possability that it may not necessarily be a gun rack, though. Could be a tool rack, for a level or other somewhat lengthy tool.

In rural Texas, almost every pickup had a gun rack. They varied from home made things to pretty elaborate contraptions sold by auto parts, gas stations and sporting goods places. During the late 50's I always had a deer rifle in the gun rack of my 50 GMC pickup during deer season, even when I parked it at school. I never gave it any thoughts that someone might steal my gun.

My 50'3600 was a rural Utah farm/mining truck and the gun rack was there when I purchased it. I have looked in many old pick-up cabs and if the rack isn't still there the holes are, seems like everybody used to have one around here.

I know what you mean kenneycj. I got my truck a few months ago and also came with a gun rack except that there was a cane in mine and not a rifle! lol! I beleive it belongs to the first owner because the co worker I bought it from is as healthy as a horse.But it does look aftermarket and not original factory. Its screwed in place with wood screws and Itll be coming down when I start on the interior.

And the fact that the truck spent most of its life in ranch here in Texas. The ranches around here have plenty of whitetails running around! Makes sense to have a gun rack with a rifle out in a ranch.

Great picture!! Thanks. That's exactly what mine looks like. My truck is in storage now so I wasn't able to get a picture of the rack when I posted my question. I will probably be taking mine off too but might try to come up with a creative use for it.

i used a blind nut (actually four) to replace my sheet metal screws that were in my bolt that heald a gun rack.
them holes were all tore up anyway. this is much cleaner.

Nice ride carolines truck! I kind of wish I would of found a deluxe cab instead of a standard. I almost backed up in to the neighbors gate when I first drove my truck!

Its bad enough as it is with no corner windows so thats one of the main reasons my gun rack is coming off.

I think they all started out as gun racks and when the owner got about as old as I am now and couldn't throw a deer in the back of the pickup any more, he started using it as a cane rack.
