What would I have to do to get everything registered? It will be a ways away, because I just started the restoration. But I just noticed that the serial number plate is missing. The truck used to be parents truck, but they are transfering the title to me. To get it registered the DMV has to verify that the title matches the serial number on the truck (which is not there)

What year truck are we discussing here? Some older titles used the engine number as a means of identification, so it's possible that's what the ID number on the title refers to. If the engine hasn't been swapped out since the truck was new, try looking on the machined pad near the distributor on a 6-cylinder truck, or on the engine block ahead of the passenger's side cylinder on a V-8. (Chevy truck, I presume?)

You don't say what year truck. Pre '55 most states used the engine number as the VIN. It is located on a raised boss behind the distributor. If the numbers don't match, the engine has been changed or the serial number (on the missing data plate) was used. If the later is the case you'll need to contact your state DMV for advise on how to rectify the problem.

it is a 1953 3100. I do not have the original engine.

you can buy a blank # plate http://www.classicparts.com/1953-Door-Post-ID-Plate-Chevrolet/productinfo/33%2D014/ ... for 1953 ... that attaches to the door post and transfer/ punch your # on it. the truck id should be on your title. in most cases you will simply just need the pink or registration paper work to get a license to you.
it's that simple.
