I'm considering replacing the front leaf springs on my '59 half ton. There's nothing wrong with them, other than they're 45 years old. I''m sure the shackles and bushings are worn, and the ride height has probably dropped due to spring sag.

I've seen comments on this site about re-arcing springs, but I'm wondering, would it be simplier to just replace them? Are reproduction springs any good? I've noticed there are 2 price brackets for reproduction springs (about $266/pair or $370/pair), depending on where you buy them. Any comments would be appreciated.

I would not replace them unless there is a reason. The bushings shackles are most likely worn and should be replaced, but unless the springs are damaged in some way I'd keep them.

I recently found three broken leafs in one spring on my Suburban. I bought shackles and bushings and then used the springs off a parts truck I already had. Seems to have worked out real well.

If you have access to a good spring shop, bring in your springs and let them re-arch them. The new springs are not near the same quality as the originals. They will also re-bush or anything else you need done at very reasonable prices.

I had mine re-arched for $100 per axle. New bushings come in the new shackle kits you can get from most any supplier.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look for a spring shop that can rework my springs.

Mr. 4d9r, I see yor are in Menlo Park. I'm just down the road from you. If you have a recommendation for a local spring shop, please let me know.

Thanks,
LT

LT,
I use "AC Spring",I believe that's their name. A real old type spring shop about a block down 13th street, off 101 in San Jose. It's like stepping back in time....
good luck,
Terry
