Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 59 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 59 | Hello I'm wanting to go with an overdrive in my 66 C30. It currently has the original 327,sm420, and 456 HO72 rear. Its a work truck not a toy so automatics and high geared rears are not an option.I want to get a few more mpg if I can wihout losing pulling power,The ranger overdrive unit from advance adapters is my first choice but the shifter wont clear the bench seat and I hate bucket seats. 2nd choice is an NV 4500 but I have a couple questions: Was the NV4500 avail, with the trns, mounted parking brake? Also will it bolt up to my orig. bellhousing? I'm sure there will be other issues also, any advice will be appreciated. Thanks, Mike | | | | | Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 942 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 942 | I'm going to consider that one myself for my '68 C-30, altho my problem won't be the E-Brake, but I have a "Self-Contained" PTO unit under there that I bet won't work with it.
I'm sure there will be others jumping in soon to answer your individual questions, but in the meantime jump over to my "2-Ton 5-Speed in a 3/4 or 1-Ton" thread and you will see some info on it. Grigg also gave us a good link to check out.
Right now my best bet with my C-30 is to put in a higher gear in the rear-end as with the SM 465 I have in there, I can afford to lose a little on the start off and first should still be a good enough off-road gear.

Many industrial truck like UPS trucks came with NV4500s in them and this it what you will want to look for in order to have one with driveline brake. I have had some tell me that they are not up to handling the weight of a two ton truck but all the transmission guys I have talked to that say that all agree that they are much stronger than an SM420 so there you have it IMO it would be a very good choice and thought about it for my 56 before I got my Allison. Search the web you will find a plethora of info you will have to weed though all the 4X4 stuff but you will find that the one you want will be the least expensive of them but you may need to look a wile for one. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 120 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 120 | Mike was asking about a NV4500 with a trans. brake.... http://s61.photobucket.com/albums/h...action=view¤t=NV4500-213-1.jpgI was fooling with photobucket today...about to pull my hair out, got up and took a walk a few times...this stuff is getting harder or I'm getting older! 1954 44001954 3800Jim D. On the right PTO cover plate, there is a sticker that has the part number for the correct lube, which is a Castrol brand synthetic 50 weight. Use of anything els will destroy the synchonizers. I've seen this firsthand with a '91 K3500. They owner went through 3 transmissions because he insisted on filling it with 90 wt gear oil instead of the correct lube. It was so sloppy that you could drop it into first gear from a dead stop with only a slight push of the shifter without touching the clutch and the engine idleing (truck was a 6.2 Deisel).

I have yet to find one with a brake but that would be near perfect. It seems to be easiest to swap in a dodge gas nv4500 since they have mechanical speedometer. To me this is the way to go using an advance adapters plate and keeping the existing clutch setup.
Earlier today I happened into a 1998 Diesel NV4500 off craigslist at a steal of a deal that is now my trading material.
