Let me start off saying that I will be contacting Classic Parts this week. That said, I thought I'd turn to the Bolt for a possible quick & accurate answer so I can still keep plugging away at my radiator this weekend.

Installing a Desert Cooler radiator w/ tranny cooler on my 56. The tranny hose connections are on the bottom, one next to the cold water return hose connection for the radiator. The other is off to the far end of the radiator.

Does it make a difference which transmission oil line I connect to the female connection at the radiator? Is there a specific return line and input feed line for the transmission cooler?

Logic would say that the connector at the cool water return hose connection would be the same for the transmission.

Always grateful for your input.
Paul

Don't know about the radiator cool lines but the air cool can go either direction.

The usual way to connect an auxiliary cooler is to put it downstream of the radiator cooler. Otherwise, the fluid cooled by the auxiliary is re-heated when it gets to the radiator. Disconnect one line at the radiator, start the engine momentarily, and see which way the fluid flows. Connect the add-on cooler so the fluid comes out of the radiator, goes through the auxiliary unit, and then route it back to the transmission.

With a couple of "T" fittings and a cutoff valve, you can bypass the extra cooler for winter operation when it might over-cool the fluid.

The tranny cooler is inside making it part of the radiator. Both connectors are at the very bottom of the radiator. One at the driver side corner of the radiator and the other next to the bottom radiator hose connection, towards the passenger side.

I pretty sure I know which line is the transmission to cooler line. But your advice is warranted, just to double check the flow direction.

I just don't know which hole to plug the line into at the radiator. No directions / no indicator at the radiator.

Paul,
I really do not think it will make any difference the tranny fluid is under pressure and will flow through the radiator to be cooled regaurdless of direction and being that both inlets are on the same level ya really cant do it backwards.
now if one is Higher than the other I would go High with the in an low with the out.
Just my 2 cents.

Tim,

I believe you are correct. After further investigation, I found that given the tranny fluid is just flowing through the radiator it really doesn't matter on the direction.

Thanks for the input.

Well how do you tell which is the inlet and outlet at the tranny?

Disconnect the cooler lines and crank up the engine for a few seconds. The line with fluid running out of it is the "outlet".

Use a couple of lengths of rubber hose, and milk jugs, if you don't want trans fluid on the floor.

Big Chevy 3600,

Fastidious is a big word. Mine's just a petite Irish gal with a mean right hook...

Should we include fastidious in the Stovebolt dictionary?

The most efficient use of the transmission cooler would be to put the supply from the transmission in the port near the radiator outlet. This makes the most of the temperature differential and gets you a few more BTU's of heat transfer.

I know the top line on my 400 tranny is the pressure side. I just using the trans. cooler alone on my 350 cu. motor with a 400 GM tranny. The trans guy said that will be plenty of cooling.
