I'm ignorant about this and need help please. I do old M/C carbs ..... but this new stuff ....

i believe i have crud inside my new edelbrock500 carb. while first starting my new engine and knowing that we have to run it for 20min @ 2grand to break in the new cam,
... i got crud'ed

and never have i taken one of these things apart, and the last time i did anything remotely like this I was in high schrool 30+ yrs ago ...... I could use some insite
i have removed the top of the carb after carefully undoing the linkage stuff. i can see some fine crud in the float bowls. i carefully soaked that up.

what's next ???????
I could not get gas to pump thru the carb to the jets. so what /how do i clean ... blow ??? the orfices out, how ?? I believe I should be able to place the spring and accel pump back in and that should pump gas to the jets. Correct?? if that passage is clogged .......
I'm at a loss guys and don't want to hurt or loose anything inside.
can i use a can of air to clean this ????

patiently waiting
thanks in advance. frown

The gas flows though the needle valve seats when the floats drop. Kinda like the back of a toilet. First pull the brass inlet fitting. It may have a screen or filter behind it that could be clogged. Turn the cover upside down & remove the float pins & the floats & the needle valves. Keep the parts on there respective sides. You should be able to blow air through the inlet pasage & come out through the needle seats. Turn the idle jets in slowly & count the number of turns till they bottom out. Then remove the idle jets & blow out the passages & air bleed holes. Be careful & dont lose the accel. pump check valve &/or ball. It or they will fall out when you turn they main body upside down. If gas goes trough to the bowl it should work.

thanks geo

i have:
cleaned all the fine particulates and gas from the float bowls. pulled the accel pump and spring. blown thru that bottom oriffic in the accel pump hole. figured it went to the two small black jets. unscrewed that block. used brake cleaner (all i could find) & ''canned" air the see the check ball move at the jet block. double checked that jet flow & screwed that block back down.
turns out it wasn't too bad just taking it a slow step at a time smile

except i lost a tiny hairclip. darnit

Now- - - - -before you fire it up again, install a BIG inline filter betweeen the fuel pump and the carbuetor. NOT one of those weenie see-thru types with a screen in it that only catches medium-sized rocks and marbles! The less crud that finds its way to the carb, the longer you can go between cleanouts!

it's ALL new:: tank & pick-up, steel and rubber line to in-line filter, line, then pump, steel line, to carb.
something musta been somewhere bummer
spider dirt in the line? who knows blush
i'm keepin my fingers crossed it's all gone now.
& guess I got an extra fuel pump and carb knowledge to boot.
thanks

Ps,
i use those see~thru's on my old bikes. vintage old machines had better gas way back when and solid copper tubing w/ a curlie que loop to help remove the vibration. just classic stuff.

Jerry,

Your students are lucky to have you as their instructor. Your posts are always very informative and easy to understand.

And your humor makes this learning process fun and a lot easier too.

Because of you I am going to change my "weenie see-thru" filter.
Now everytime I see one of those filters I'm going to think about "Rocks & Marbles"

Point well taken. Thanks again for your help.

Carter (the carb company) has a real nice inline filter, has a replacable cartridge elements and is rated for feul injection use. I beleive I paid less than $20 for mine.

I had a problem once with brand new fuel hose shedding little black rubber bits into the carbs on my bike. Let me tell you, cleaning out 4 Keyster carbs on the side of a road while it is getting dark is not a fun project.
